12 more left-wing independent media accounts to follow
Here are 12 more left-wing social media accounts and independent journalists who are worth following (various platforms)
My 2018 article detailing 12 left-wing independent media accounts you should be following is still consistently one of the best performing posts on the old AAV blog, so I thought it was about time to update it with another 12 recommendations.
So here they are, in no particular order.
None of these accounts are backed by billionaire media moguls; corporate interests; or shady far-right think tanks. If you value their content, consider subscribing/donating to help them continue creating more.
Tadhg Hickey [Xitter account] [Donate]
An absolute Irish legend, anti-imperialist to the core, lovely bloke too. Here’s one of his early sketches about Israel-Palestine. Well worth a follow.
CronxWatch [YouTube] [Donate]
This guy is a Croydon-based video journalist. I used to have a mate in Croydon so I’m vaguely familiar with some of the places he films in, but despite my lack of connection to Croydon I’m a big fan of his work and his presentation style. Plus he’s really quite funny at times too.
Here are three of his best YouTube video essays:
○ Offshore Developers Want My Local Pool
○ Why Are All Of Our Schools Academies Now?
○ What’s Going on With Thames Water?
James Rehwald [TikTok] [Donate]
This guy makes extraordinary TikTok video essays. You’ll need to be quick with the pause button to absorb all of the information in a lot of them.
Grace Blakeley [Substack] [Bluesky] [Order her book]
Grace Blakeley is a dedicated and astute political commentator. I follow her on various socials, and I regularly read her stuff.
Here’s a thought-provoking article of hers about why she stopped accepting so many invites to go on the TV (even though she makes very strong cases for left-wing and humanitarian positions when she does go on)
Shaun Vids [YouTube] [BlueSky] [Donate]
If you’re a fan of long-form YouTube video essays, you’re going to love this guy. Well worth following on BlueSky too.
Declassified UK [Website] [BlueSky] [Donate]
If you really want to know what the British government and British military are up to in the world, Declassified UK is the website to follow.
In 2020 the Ministry of Defence blacklisted Declassified UK and stated that "we no longer deal with your publication", which tells you exactly what you need to know about how they ask the awkward questions that Britain’s complicit capitalist media hacks refuse to.
In more recent times Declassified UK have been one of the few outlets shining a light on the UK government’s complicity with Israeli genocide, particularly the secretive UK surveillance flights over Gaza.
Gary’s Economics [YouTube] [BlueSky]
Gary Stephenson is a millionaire former city trader who now works as an anti-inequality campaigner and economics educator. He tries to explain economic concepts in a way that is understandable and accessible to ordinary people (something I try to do in my economics writing too).
His YouTube channel is excellent. Here’s one of his video shorts:
European Powell [Substack] [Donate]
David Powell works incredibly hard trying to raise awareness of the sinister corporate takeover of Britain via ultra-deregulated SEZs and Freeports, which is an issue that gets only a tiny fraction of the attention it deserves. He’s well worth following.
Consider signing his petition for full government transparency on SEZs and Freeports here.
Peter Ganley [TikTok]
I’ve only just come across this guy, and if his Irish explanation of the Israeli attack on Iran is anything to go by, he’s going to come up with plenty more cracking content.
Caitlin Johnstone [Website] [Xitter] [Donate]
Caitlin Johnstone is an Australian independent journalist who pulls no punches in her writing.
Here’s one of her recent articles about the Israeli soldiers telling an Israeli newspaper (Haaretz) that they were ordered to fire on unarmed civilians at food distribution points, and the Israeli government’s bonkers attempt to dismiss these reports with accusations of antisemitism and "blood libel".
Byline Times [Website] [BlueSky] [Subscribe]
Byline Times describe themselves as "the UK's only reader-funded, independent newspaper that truly sits outside of the established system".
They’ve been excellent on all kinds of issues like PPE corruption during covid; the water privatisation fiasco; Brexit; the government’s malicious disability cuts; and Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians.
Ricky Hale / Council Estate Media [Substack] [BlueSky] [Xitter]
Council Estate Media is a nexus of various different blogs including the main Council Estate Media Substack; Anti-imperialist Nexus (geopolitics); Dystopian Times (domestic UK politics); and Normal Island News (satire).
Another Angry Voice [Substack] [Facebook] [BlueSky] [Donate]
Forgive me for giving myself a shout out as a bonus 13th recommendation on this list.
Remember that myself; the left-wing content creators listed here; and the ones from my original 2018 list, are all supported by subscriptions and donations from readers and viewers, not by capitalist interests, billionaire media moguls, or dodgy far-right think tanks.
If you see some value in left-wing content creation, it’s important to support it if you can afford a few quid a month.
I would like to add two websites ( really substacks) to your list.
1) The first is Jonathan Cook: https://jonathancook.substack.com/ A former Middle East correspondent for the Guardian, Jonathan provides excellent timely coverage & analysis of the genocide in Gaza by the Israeli war machine. Superb stuff. Here is a link to a piece of 2 July ( https://jonathancook.substack.com/p/the-real-crimes-are-taking-place)

2) I am the editor of THE LEFT LANE ( https://theleftlane2024.substack.com/ ) that was created in Jan. 2024.
