GB News has racked up an astonishing £76 million in losses against tiny revenues, but that's the price the owners are willing to pay to corrupt British political discourse.
It is not true that they do not pay any tax; it is not tax evasion. Tom is being misleading. They pay rates, VAT, employer NICs, among others – they will have paid millions in tax over the last couple of years. Only corporation tax is levied on profits, and the same basic rules have existed since 1965 when it was introduced. No profit, no corporation tax, same for all firms including recently The Guardian they will no Corp tax either. Hope this helps, all the best Sam
I am a classic free-market liberal, and I too hate much of the content on GB News. But I believe in Voltaire's words more: 'Monsieur l’abbé, je déteste ce que vous écrivez, mais je donnerais ma vie pour que vous puissiez continuer à écrire.'
I disagree with almost everything in 'The New Worker' and 'Morning Star' (incidentally, neither has ever made any money in decades or paid any corporation tax). But I am glad they keep going, as I am pleased you keep writing, Tom, because I believe in a free and varied press. The same applies to GB News; however hateful I find them, I am pleased they are there. The press regulator has nailed them on 6 separate occasions, and I am pleased each time they do. Press freedom means that people have the right to publish things that you hate. Suck it up and long live a free press.
From a Canadian point of view, it seems that GB News is just another way to make enormous contributions to the Conservative Party (and possibly Reform). In Canada, corporations and unions are not permitted to contribute to political parties and the amount any individual can contribute is capped. This applies both federally and provincially. While our mainstream media are certainly heavily and obviously biased towards the Liberal Party (not liberal) and the Conservative Party (extreme right wing), I think if any of them went so far as GB News has gone, Elections Canada and Elections Nova Scotia (the overseers of political spending) would have something to say. Having said that, the wealthy and powerful spread their money around so they still get, after the election, a good return on their investments.
I agree with everything though I would suggest that the ‘conspiracy theories’ about mishandling and overreaction (by the Tories themselves) to the ‘pandemic’ have all been proven to be true and that the ‘pandemic’ itself was used to create fear of left wing control and attract their GB news’ target audience. The propaganda they feed them is that the climate crisis is a left wing hoax.
I agree, I don’t want propaganda forced on me, can’t believe the lies they come out with! 👩
How tax evasion at this level succeeds is for our non-democracy to be corrupt through and through.
