Like a lot of people, I've given up on Twitter. I only continue on Facebook because the (elderly) left and Afghan friends are on there. I'm trying out Threads, and it's ok so far. I didn't like Mastodon, as the basic idea seems to be to create a load of siloes. The more we all speak to each other, regardless of political affiliation the better. Plus Mastodon is simply too teckie for most people. However, Threads promises (if we believe Zuckerberg) to become part of the 'fediverse' itself. I can't believe Meta would relinquish control in that way, but that's currently part of the road map.
I think your plan for Substack sounds good. I get a kind of summary from a number of people I follow on Substack, so that's always worth doing. Make sure you save your name on Threads before it goes (I couldn't find it in a search). Concise, verified, sourced and punchy is always good! Good luck to your elbow!
I think Mastodon is quite good and I like it on there. Benefits are not having any adverts and not being at the mercy of an Algorithm!
Don't think Threads will change my view of Zuckerberg! I like Instagram for the pictures. Put up with the invasive tracking and ad spamming on their but expect Threads to turn into adfest in a year or so!
Mate 2,500 followers is a bloody fantastic start. Here are some tips that might help you grow even faster.
- use the import feature to import all of your old blog posts. This will help new readers see you have a large catalogue of work.
- take advantage of the Substack recommendation system. If you recommend British writers some will recommend you back. This means your Substack will be recommended every time someone follows them and you will be included in their monthly digest that goes out to their readers. You can even crosspost each other's work, meaning you send a preview of an article to all your followers. This is super-helpful for reaching new audiences, but I wouldn't overuse this feature.
- set up a Notes account if you haven't already. Most Substack users are getting most of their new subs from Notes. It definitely helps, especially if you're maintaining a presence. If you hit restack on your article it will then make it visible on Notes and what's brilliant is it's seen by many more people than just your subscribers. You should see that you're getting loads more readers than you ever did on blogger.
I have tons of other tips so if you need any, just let me know.
With regards to your article, I recommend writing 3-4 posts a week - longer articles work better on Substack and you can gauge what your readers want from the likes/comments.
Use Threads as it's great for reaching new people who aren't typical Twitter/Facebook users (Mastodon isn't great but will still help a little). Don't give up on Twitter as you can still share all your posts there.
Great to be part of the "Inner Circle." The proposed essays etc sound about right to me. It won't do to overload to start with. Speaking as an ex Labour party member I welcome your slant on news in general and I would like to see you continue to provide a realistic view of our " political mess"
I would hope for one item per week as a MAX, given the other subscriptions one has: e.g. Jordan Peterson.'s 'Mondays of Meaning', (and I haven't subscribed to him on Daily Wire+, yet).
I highly appreciate the ideals & the quality of your writing. I have been following you on Facebook for a long time so, I do understand the frustration caused by its increasingly cencorious nature. Thank you.
Like all things, I sence the days of facebook and twitter will pass into history as new things come along. Looking forward to be able to read your content again.
I think your plan sounds good Tom. I have also started with Threads and like the previous commenter, hope to get away from silos ( left wing ghetto in my case) I would appreciate your comments on human rights issues in the UK. Your views are always fact-based and rigorously checked, so reliable, and it could be helpful to me in the monthly report-backs that I do on the subject to my Unite branch and my Amnesty group.
Hi Tom. I was one of your many followers before I stepped away from SM. Nice to see you again! I wouldn’t worry too much about notification emails; I think most people ignore those anyway and just check their feeds.
One thing that's good about this platform is that I'll be able to see more of your posts. If you post the same things that you have traditionally posted to FB, I'll be happy!
Unfortunately I can't afford paid right now, but we'll see where this goes, all of us here together.
No need to apologise. Remember, you're still helping a lot every time you interact (like, share, comment) and especially when you post a link to my work somewhere.
Mate, I wouldn't waste any time trying out other platforms until we know what's working. Keep an eye on them sure, but use more of that energy for here. Better for you mentally too.
I think this style of social media is the way forward.
Your ideas for here sound great. Keep up the good work dude.

Every minute people don't spend on Twitter is a good minute.

I share on Spoutible and Threads so if your Substack is noteworthy it gets posted.

I've added you to favourites now on FB, so hopefully that'll help, too! :)

Oh, and P.S, nobody really knows how to work this site yet 😃 I'd recommend everyone to download the app, it's so much better
